How Native Cigarettes Are Made: Start to Finish

Ever wonder how native cigarettes are made — from raw leaf to smoke-ready pack? Here’s a full breakdown of how we do it at Smokeway.

Step 1: Sourcing the tobacco

It starts with the right leaf. All our tobacco is grown in Canada, primarily on First Nations farms that know this crop better than anyone.

We work with growers who respect the land and cultivate clean, natural tobacco.

We use a mix of tobacco types to build signature blends for both Full Flavor smokes and Lights — each chosen for its flavor, burn rate, and body:

BurleyAir-curedEarthy, rich, low sugarSlowFull-bodied smoke, adds structure
OrientalSun-curedAromatic, spicy-sourFastComplex flavor, natural spiciness

Every blend we roll is built for balance — not just to hit a flavor profile, but to burn smoothly and taste clean.

Step 2: Curing, cutting & blending

Tobacco curing happens either on our farms or in-house, depending on the leaf and the blend. Once cured, the tobacco is shredded — not ground down — to preserve the leaf’s natural structure and moisture balance.

We only age tobacco when a blend calls for it. No over-processing. Just enough to let the flavors mellow when needed.

This step is all about protecting the quality of the leaf: no additives, no chemical tampering. Just Canadian-grown tobacco, handled with care.

Step 3: Zero additives — it’s the policy

Some cigarette makers load their tobacco with:

  • Humectants (like propylene glycol);
  • Preservatives;
  • Ammonia.

We don’t. Not in a single brand, including Elite, Canadian, and Canadian Classics. Our smokes contain 100% natural tobacco only. No additives, no chemical moisture stabilizers, no fake sweeteners.

And we back that up with in-house lab testing — every batch is checked for moisture levels, consistency, and purity before it ever hits the machine.

Step 4: Rolling: fully automated

Our rolling lines are fully automated — consistent, efficient, precise. No human error, no old-school hand-roll inconsistency.

Each cigarette is:

  • Uniform in draw (so you don’t get a “tight” or “dead” cig);
  • Packed to spec, with a smooth, natural burn;
  • Filtered with plain filters, no sweeteners or chemical enhancers;
  • Wrapped in high-grade rolling paper.

We don’t bleach or “treat” our paper. It’s premium-grade and meant to let the tobacco do the talking. All in accordance with the Tobacco and Vaping Products act.

Step 5: Packaging: clean, fresh, eco-friendly

We seal every pack with:

  • An inner foil for air-tight freshness;
  • An outer plastic wrap (that’s also biodegradable).

No overdesign. Just the right amount of protection to keep your cigarettes fresh without polluting the planet.

Step 6: Lab testing & quality control

Freshness and purity are non-negotiable.

Our in-house lab checks every production run for:

  • Moisture levels (to avoid stale or mold-prone product);
  • Burn speed & draw resistance;
  • Tobacco consistency (to make sure no blend is off).

Once approved, our products go straight to storage — in climate-controlled units that keep out heat, humidity, and spoilage.

All products are stored separately: there’s a place for, say, Canadian Classics Original, and there’s a separate place for Canadian Lights.

Unlike big brands whose cigs might sit in a warehouse or shipping container for months, our products ship within days of being rolled.

Step 7: Direct to you — while it’s still fresh

We don’t warehouse bulk stock for months.

Every order is pulled fresh from inventory and shipped direct:

  • 1–3 days for Ontario and Quebec;
  • 3–5 days across the rest of Canada.

Fresh cigarettes don’t just taste better — they burn cleaner, hold together better, and stay true to their blend.

By the way, if you have more questions about the delivery — you can check our Customer Help section.

Every cigarette we make is rolled, packed, and tested on First Nations land, by licensed professionals who know tobacco inside and out.

We combine traditional respect for natural tobacco with modern equipment and lab testing. No outsourcing — just honest smokes from a place that still believes in quality.
